PROFILES FROM BEN-GURION UNIVERSITY:

Dr. Neve Gordon:

Dr. Neve Gordon, born on June 15, 1965, is a professor of Government and Politics at Ben-Gurion University and was formerly the head of the department. He received his doctorate from Notre Dame University, and has been a visiting scholar at the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Michigan, Ann Harbor, and Brown University. He is the author of three books: Torture, Human Rights, Medical Ethics and the Case of Israel; From the Margins of Globalization: Critical Perspectives on Human Rights; and Israel’s Occupation.

During the First Intifada, he was the director of Physicians for Human Rights—Israel. According to NGO Monitor, Physicians for Human Rights---Israel is an organization that claims its raison d’être to be working to uncover “Israel’s mechanisms of bureaucratic violence which is hidden from the public eye.” Physicians for Human Rights---Israel have given first aid training to protesters at the security barrier near Bil’in. On November 9, 2009, Physicians for Human Rights---Israel signed a petition together with Adalah and Al Mezan where they argued against Mogan David Adom ambulances having police escorts when they enter Arab areas, despite the fact that Mogan David Adom ambulances have often been attacked in Arab neighborhoods. As a result of such radical activism, the Israeli Medical Association halted cooperation with Physicians for Human Rights----Israel. Dr. Yoram Blacher, president of the World Medical Association, referred to Physicians for Human Rights----Israel as “a radical political group disguised as a medical organization.”

But Physicians for Human Rights----Israel is not the only problematic group that Dr. Neve Gordon is associated with, for Dr. Gordon is also an active member in Ta’ayush. Ta’ayush, according to NGO Monitor, “reflects the Palestinian political agenda” by remaining opposed to the Security Barrier and other self-defense measures that have saved Israeli lives, in addition to referring to Israel as an “apartheid” state and supporting BDS.”

Yet supporting radical NGOs is far from our only issue with Dr. Gordon. On July 28, 2010, Dr. Neve Gordon wrote in the Guardian that Israel is guilty of ethnically cleansing Bedouins. On October 6, 2009, Dr. Neve Gordon came out in support of three draft dodgers who were escaping their service in South Africa. On November 30, 2009, Front Page Magazine reported that Dr. Neve Gordon hosted a convicted Palestinian in his house. This is not surprising, given that in 2002, Dr. Neve Gordon along with other Israeli left wing extremists had barricaded themselves into Yasser Arafat’s Ramallah compound during the IDF’s siege, thus volunteering to be human shields for Yasser Arafat. In 2009, Dr. Gordon wrote a controversial editorial in the Los Angeles Times where he came out in support of boycotting Israel, despite the fact that he receives his paycheck from an Israeli government supported academic institution. He has remained a consistent supporter of BDS. And right in the middle of the Gaza War, Dr. Neve Gordon declared that the Israeli government was worse than Hamas, despite the fact that it was Hamas and not the Israeli government who sent rockets to Ben-Gurion University. Yet as if this was not bad enough, Dr. Alan Dershowitz has exposed the fact that Dr. Neve Gordon has politically aligned himself with neo-Nazis, Holocaust justice deniers, and anti-Semites. He has links with the self-hating Jewish professor, Dr. Norman Finkelstein and the deported Neo-Nazis activist Ernst Zundel. Dr. Gordon was also responsible for leading false war crimes charges against his commanding officer in the IDF, which resulted in preventing his commanding officer from being able to pursue higher educational opportunities in the UK. But as if Dr. Neve Gordon’s political activities outside the classroom were not problematic enough, one student from the University of Michigan who took a class with Dr. Neve Gordon reported that he taught the Israeli-Palestinian conflict course there with incredible bias, and as a result, “Prof. Gordon has produced an escalation to the onslaught of anti-Israel sentiment on the campus of the University of Michigan.” But as if teaching false and skewed history was not problematic enough, this pro-Israel student asserted that Dr. Gordon constantly sought to embarrass students who had the chutzpah to challenge him. This is in accordance with Dr. Gordon’s general worldview that critics of Israel haters should not be allowed to speak their minds.

Dr. Oren Yiftachel:

Dr. Oren Yiftachel, born in 1956, teaches political geography, urban planning, and public policy at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. He completed his PHD at the University of Western Australia at Perth and at the Technion. In addition to Ben-Gurion University, he has taught at Curtin University; the Technion; the University of Pennsylvania; Columbia University; the University of California at Berkeley; the University of Capetown; and the University of Venice. He was also a research fellow at RMIT, Melbourne, the US Institute of Peace, and Van Leer Institute. He is the author of Planning a Mixed Region: Political Geography in Galilee, Ashgate; Urban and Regional Planning in Western Australia;Planning and Social Control: Policy and Resistance in a Divided Society; Ethnic Frontiers and Boundaries; The Power of Planning; Israelis in Conflict; and Ethnocracy: Land and Identity Politics in Israel/Palestine.

Dr. Yiftachel has been intimately involved with numerous left wing NGOs. Out of all of the left wing NGOs that Dr. Yiftachel is involved in, Mossawa (Ethnic Equality in Israel) and B’tselem are by far the most extremist in their positions. According to NGO Monitor, “Mossawa’s main focus is political, and aims to delegitimize Israel on the basis of blanket charges of racism and other prerogatives. It often removes or minimizes the context of terrorism to demonize Israeli security measures.” In their annual racism report, Mossawa claimed that it was a violation of Arab political freedom for Israel to bring charges against MK Muhammed Barake when he assaulted a police officer and that Israeli newspapers were guilty of racist incitement when they pointed out that Hezbollah terrorists sometimes had some Israeli Arab support. Mossawa joined a coalition of NGO’s in calling upon the Norwegian Government Pension Fund to “stop investing in the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory” and proposed a constitution for Israel which stated, “The State of Israel was established on the ruins of the Palestinian people, for whom the event was a national tragedy---the Nakba.” In the same proposed constitution, Mossawa also rejected the notion that Israel is a Jewish state, as well as the current national anthem and national flag.

However, B’tselem, of which Dr. Yiftachel is co-chair of the Board of Directors, is not that much better than Mossawa. According to NGO Monitor, “B’tselem has faced serious criticism for its misrepresentation of international law, inaccurate research, and skewed statistics.” B’tselem regularly minimizes Israeli security concerns and deliberately chooses to not report on human rights violations that happen within mainland Israel. The executive director of B’tselem, Jessica Montell, believes that the situation in the West Bank is worse than apartheid and one former employee of B’tselem, Lizi Sagie, compared Israel to Nazism, claimed that Israel exploits the memory of the Holocaust for political gain, and called Israel’s Memorial Day a “pornographic circus of glorifying grief and silencing voices.”

Yet supporting radical NGOs is far from our only issue with Dr. Yiftachel. Dr. Yiftachel’s arguments that Israel is an apartheid state while speaking at the University of Johannesburg have worked to influence South African academics to support a boycott of Ben-Gurion University. Dr. Yiftachel also supports the artists who have refused to perform at Ariel University and signed a petition himself in favor of boycotting Ariel University; in addition to signing a petition supporting lecturers and students who refuse to serve in the Palestinian territories and called for an international force to be sent to help the Palestinian people. In addition to supporting Refusniks, indirectly supporting those who want to boycott BGU, and supported the boycott of Ariel University, Dr. Yiftachel is a supporter of the Palestinian right of return. Dr. Yiftachel once wrote that “the green line is not a border but a colonial line of racist control, with Israel ruling on both sides with the exception of small pockets of ghettoized Palestinian autonomy in the colonized territories.” Dr. Yiftachel told Al Ahram that the Gaza War was not about Israel defending herself against rocket attacks, but about “denying, erasing, and eliminating any historic reference to the Palestinians and their existence.” Dr. Yiftachel believes that the 2009 Israeli elections resulted in “the structural entanglement of Israeli politics within a colonialist process of creeping apartheid not only in the West Bank but in Israel proper.” Dr. Yiftachel thinks that Israel is not a democracy, but an ethnocracy, “which denotes a non-democratic rule for and by a dominant ethnic group, within the state and beyond its borders.” While teaching international students in the MAPMES program, he taught in a very biased format by arguing that “Israel is in a colonial situation with the Palestinians;” “on the right, you will find elements of deep racism” in Israeli society; and while discussing Yisrael Beiteinu’s role in the last election, Dr. Yiftachel stated, “if apartheid can legitimately run for election on the ticket of denying citizenship, that means the boundary is very shaky in terms of including all the citizens,” etc. He also tried to intimidate a pro-Israel student who tried to expose him into silence.

Dr. Ahmad Sa’di:

Dr. Ahmad Sa’di is a senior lecturer in the Department of Government and Politics at Ben-Gurion University. He received his PHD in sociology from the University of Manchester in the UK. Dr. Sa’di has also taught courses at Haifa University, Tel Aviv University, Emek Yezreel College, Hebrew University, and Beit Berl College. He is the co-author of a book entitled, Nakba: Palestine, 1948, and the Claims of Memory.

Dr. Ahmad Sa’di is active in the Badil organization. According to NGO Monitor, Badil supports a Palestinian right of return. Badil regularly exploits human rights language by accusing Israel of engaging in “genocide.” Badil also uses dehumanizing language in reference to Israel, by calling her a “colonial apartheid regime” and claiming that she is guilty of “state-sponsored racism,” “systematic ethnic cleansing,” and that “institutionalized racism and discrimination” is “the root cause of the ongoing internal forcible displacement and dispossession of the Palestinian people.” In 2010, an anti-Semitic cartoon won the Badil Al-Awda Nakba Caricature competition. Badil has been active in trying to prosecute Israeli military officials abroad and is a staunch supporter of BDS.

However, Dr. Sa’di’s connection with Badil is not our only issue with him. In July 2010, Dr. Ahmad Sa’di signed onto a letter to PA President Mahmoud Abbas as an endorser where President Abbas was criticized for stating, “I would never deny the Jewish right to the land of Israel” at the AIPAC Policy Conference. According to the letter which Dr. Sa’di signed, this statement is “tantamount to a surrender of the right of Palestinian citizens of Israel to live in equality in their own homeland, in which they have steadfastly remained despite the apartheid regime imposed on them for decades. It also concedes the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes.” Also in 2010, Dr. Ahmad Sa’di signed onto a letter protesting the fact that a lecturer from Ariel University would be partaking in the 2010 Iranian Studies Biennial Conference in Santa Monica, California. The same letter also supported the Palestinian call for a boycott of all “Israeli academic institutions complicit in the occupation.” Dr. Sa’di signed this letter, despite the fact that the university which employs him does have links to the IDF. From February 21 to 22, 2010, Dr. Sa’di participated in a London conference entitled “After Gaza, continuing the struggle on campus.” Dr. Sa’di gave a lecture on “The Social and Economic History of the Palestinian Resistance,” implying that Dr. Sa’di sees Palestinian terrorism as legitimate resistance. In January 2010, Dr. Sa’di fabricated that Ben-Gurion University was behaving in a racist manner towards him, when in reality the security guards just needed to do a routine check because there was intelligence that a terrorist was trying to attack the university. On Israel’s sixtieth birthday, Dr. Ahmad Sa’di published a piece on the sixtieth anniversary of the Nakba. In this piece, Dr. Sa’di wrote that “in 1948, the vast majority of the indigenous population, the more than 750,000 Palestinians who resided on 77.8 percent of their country----which later became Israel----were expelled. The will of the international community to allow their return, expressed in UN resolution 194, has been ignored.”

Dr. Dani Filc:

Dr. Dani Filc was born in Argentina in 1959 and arrived in Israel in 1984. Dr. Dani Filc is a senior lecturer in the Department of Government and Politics and is currently serving as chair of the department at Ben-Gurion University. He completed his PHD at Tel Aviv University. Dr. Dani Filc also has worked in the past for Clalit Health Services, Tel Aviv University, and Haifa University. Dr. Dani Filc is the author of The Power of Property: Israel in a Globalized Age, Circles of Exclusion: the Politics of Health in Israel, The Political Right in Israel: the Many Faces of Jewish Populism, and Hegemony and Populism in Israel.

However, Dr. Dani Filc’s connection with Physicians for Human Rights----Israel is not our only problem with him. For example, on September 6, 2010, Dr. Filc gave a lecture at the Negev Coexistence Forum for Civil Equality where he compared Israel to fascism. On August 7, 2010, Dr. Filc signed onto a petition declaring that university professors who support boycotting the state and institutions that pay them should not receive any consequences for their treacherous actions. On January 26, 2010, Dr. Filc spoke at Harvard University, where he asserted that Israel uses healthcare as a “potent tool for occupation and control over Palestinians.” But as if this was not bad enough, Dr. Dani Filc has signed onto the “Courage to refuse combatants letter,” which calls upon signatures to not serve in the Palestinian territories, claims that the IDF behaves unethically in the territories, and that our presence in the territories is not about Israeli security.

Dr. Haim Yacobi:

Dr. Haim Yacobi was born on June 25, 1965 in Be’ersheva, Israel. He is an architect and planner, as well as a lecturer, in the Department of Government and Politics at Ben-Gurion University. He received his PHD from Ben-Gurion University in the Department of Geography and Environmental Development. It is interesting to note that his thesis advisor for his PHD was no other than Dr. Oren Yiftachel and that the title of his thesis was “Urban Ethnocracy: The Construction of a City and Identities.” Dr. Yacobi was formerly employed at the Van Leer Institute in Jerusalem, Cambridge University, and the Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. He has published three books entitled The Israeli City or Cities in Israel, Separation: The Politics of Israeli Space, and Constructing a Sense of Place.

Dr. Haim Yacobi was formerly the chairman of the Board of Directors at the anti-Israel NGO Bimkom. According to NGO Monitor, Bimkom “engages in attempts to change Israeli governmental policy on issues such as spatial planning, planning procedures, housing rights, and amending the Planning and Building Law and the Freedom of Information Act.” Past campaigns have included trying to “retroactively legalize illegal construction in Arab neighborhoods.” In 2008, Bimkom published a report entitled “The Prohibited Zone,” which criticized the Security Barrier while removing the context of terrorism. NGO Monitor also notes that Bimkom also engages in campaigns that are unrelated to planning rights, such as petitioning against “collective punishment in Gaza” and bringing cases to the Israeli Supreme Court that falsely allege that Israel callously attacks Palestinian medical teams and ambulances.

However, being involved with Bimkom is not our only issue with Dr. Haim Yacobi. In an interview given in November 2009, Dr. Yacobi stated, “the establishment of Israel as a home for the Jewish people is a problematic definition,” thus denying Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state. In October 2008, Dr. Yacobi published a problematic op-ed in Haaretz entitled “Separate and unequal,” which argued that discrimination against Arabs is what caused the Acre Yom Kippur Riots in 2008 and not the fact that an Arab person was disrespectful enough to drive through Jewish areas while blasting his radio loudly on Yom Kippur, thus causing a pro-Palestinian blogger to use his article to claim that Israel is an apartheid state. Dr. Yacobi also signed onto a petition commemorating Palestinians who have been “depopulated, dispossessed, humiliated, and tortured by the Zionists.” But as if all of this was not bad enough, Dr. Yacobi is on the steering committee of an initiative known as the Academy Community Partnership for Social Change, which seeks to turn students into anti-Israel activists.

Hebrew University

Prof. RACHEL GIORA:

Prof. Rachel Giora is a professor of linguistics at Tel Aviv University. Prof. Giora is an active member of BOYCOTT: Supporting the Palestinian BDS Call from within, which is an organization full of Israelis who support boycotting their own country.

In April 2010, Prof. Giora signed onto a letter to the CRH management in Ireland, telling them to “divest from Israeli apartheid.” In May 2010 the OECD ministerial committee voted on the admission of Israel as a member of the organization and Prof' Giora signed a petition "Israeli Citizens Say: Do Not Approve Israel's OECD Membership Until It Abides by International Law."

In January 2010, Prof. Giora wrote an article on BDS where she discussed the history of Israeli involvement in supporting boycotts against Israel. According to the article, Prof. Giora admitted that the major role that Israelis play in the BDS movement is to give it legitimacy against attacks that boycotts against Israel are anti-Semitic, in addition to showing solidarity with the Palestinians who are protesting the “criminal occupation.” She also argued that Israel is an apartheid state and that BDS should remain in place so long as Israel controls any of the territories that she captured in 1967. Prof. Giora also accused Abbas of betraying the Palestinian struggle by withdrawing support temporally from the Goldstone Report. In an article published in Haaretz, Prof. Giora came out in support of Dr. Neve Gordon’s call for boycotting Israel and was highly critical of Prof. Carmi for being upset at how he embarrassed Ben-Gurion University. In 2009, Prof. Giora signed onto a letter sent to Madonna, Leonard Cohen, telling them not to perform in Tel Aviv. Also in 2009, Prof. Giora sent a letter to BRICUP’s pre-UCU Congress, praising them for supporting BDS against Israel, and signed onto a petition telling the Barcelona Department for International Cooperation to cancel the twinning agreement between Barcelona and Tel Aviv. Prof. Giora also co-signed a letter to the EU, telling them to suspend trade agreements with Israel after the Gaza War. And Prof. Giora also was a leader in trying to get Princeton University to boycott Israel.

Non israeli Universit

DR. ZALMAN AMIT:

Dr. Zalman Amit is a professor of psychology at the Center for Studies in Behavioral Neurobiology in Concordia University. He is a co-writer of Notes on a Conflict, which is an electronic newspaper on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Amit is a founding member of Alliance of Concerned Jewish Canadians. In June 2006, ACJC defended the CUPE resolution for a boycott of Israel in contrast to the Canadian Jewish Congress, which condemned the CUPE Israel boycott. CUPE Ontario President Sid Ryan sited the ACJC position as evidence that he was not guilty of being an anti-Semite. On these grounds, along with the fact that ACJC refers to Israel as an apartheid state, led the Canadian Jewish Congress to reject ACJC’s request for affiliation.

Amit signed onto a petition supporting a Canadian boycott of Israel, which supported a CUPE decision and denounced international investments in Israel which the petition claimed “support Israel’s daily violations of international law and accelerated colonization of the occupied territories”; referred to the Security Barrier as an “apartheid wall”; and made a series of other accusations portraying Israel in a dehumanizing manner. In October 2006, Amit accused the Canadian Jewish lobby of engaging in war crimes. In 2005, he called upon the Canadian Jewish community to stop supporting Israel. In 2003, right in the middle of the Second Intifada, Amit signed onto a petition calling for international involvement in order to stop the Israeli “occupation.” According to this same petition, the Israeli right seeks to eliminate the Palestinian national presence west of the Jordan River; promotes violence against Palestinians; that Israel routinely demolishes Palestinian homes and appropriates Palestinian land for settlers in order to minimize the actual area inhabited by Palestinians; that Israel engages in huge-scale harassment, humiliation, beatings, detention of thousands in sub-human conditions, and a series of other things; that Palestinians are living in ghettos thanks to Israel; that Israel’s actions are encouraging terrorism; that nationalism is backwards; and that young Israelis participating in the “occupation” will be morally scarred for life.

DR. DAPHNA LEVIT:

Dr. Daphna Levit is currently teaching at the Senior College Association of Nova Scotia. She formerly taught finance at both Ben-Gurion University and Tel Aviv University, and is the co-writer of Notes on a Conflict, which is an electronic newspaper on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Levit was involved with the Coalition of Women for Peace. Levit signed unto a petition of 530 Jewish anti-Israel activists who claim that they support a Palestinian right of return to Israel proper. She also signed unto a petition of 287 Israeli faculty members who declared that they support both students and faculty who refuse to serve in the “occupied territories” and declared that Israel denies Palestinians “basic human rights” and routinely oppresses them. DR. RABAH HALABI

Dr. Rabah Halabi is a lecturer in the department of education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he completed his PhD.

Dr. Rabah Halabi is a guest editor for Mada Al-Carmel: Arab Center for Applied Social Science Research. According to NGO Monitor, the Mada Al-Carmel Arab Center for Applied Social Research also co-authored the Haifa Declaration, which calls for a “change in the definition of the State of Israel from a Jewish state” and accuses Israel of “exploiting the Holocaust at the expense of the Palestinian people.” Mada Al Carmel organized an academic conference in July 2009 where several participants advocated for a one-state solution, and at another Mada Al Carmel conference in January 2010, one participant stated “Israel is a racist state, and a racist state cannot guarantee or create a culture of justice. It creates a racist and aggressive culture.”

During a workshop for students from Rupin College, Dr. Rabah Halabi, while discussing Jewish-Arab relations within Israel made it quite clear that he and most of the Arab Israeli community believe that group identity is very important and “identify with Palestinians living under occupation.” In 2008, Dr. Rabah Halabi opened a conference entitled “The Roles of Palestinian Intellectuals in Israel and the Occupied Territories,” which was sponsored by the anti-Israel non-governmental organization, the Alternative Information Center. That same year, Dr. Rabah Halabi also gave a lecture on post-colonial theory to a group of academics seeking to undermine Israel under the guise of human rights. In 2007, Dr. Rabah Halabi gave a lecture entitled “Situating Nationalist Discourse: Indexical Aspects of Zionist Colonial Arguments” at a conference entitled “Dialogue under Occupation” that was sponsored by Northeastern Illinois University.

Dahlia Scheindlin:

Dahlia Scheindlin is a doctoral candidate at Tel Aviv University and is a visiting lecturer in the department of Government and Politics at Ben-Gurion University. Her resume claims that her “social/political clients” includes the Meretz Party; Ir Amim, which, according to NGO Monitor, promotes the Palestinian narrative on Jerusalem and minimizes Israeli security concerns; the Palestinian Authority; Women against Violence, which views Israel to be a “colonialist racist settler society” and supports BDS; and Gisha, which, according to NGO Monitor, employs “apartheid” rhetoric, misrepresents international legal terminology, and accuses Israel of engaging in “collective punishment.”

On December 22, 2010, Dahlia Scheindlin published an article entitled “Israel: Far from Feminism,” which asserts that Israel is a primitive and chauvinistic country when it comes to asserting women’s rights, that there is a lot of nastiness in Israel in general, that the Shabak are “agitators,” and that Kadima started two wars and supported “some of the nastiest, most destructive legislation to civil society and equality in Israel.” Other than claiming that motherhood is highly valued in Israel and citing several cases where Israeli public officials abused their authority, she provided zero evidence to any of these assertions. She also claimed that gender issues would not be solved in Israel until the “dangerously nationalistic forces it strokes are dissolved.” On September 28, 2010, Dahlia Scheindlin published another article entitled “Israelis should listen to the message of the Jewish flotilla,” where she claimed that the IDF tortured the participants on the Jewish Flotilla and that the Jewish Flotilla participants had Israel’s best interests in heart by trying to break the siege on Gaza, as if helping out a territory run by Hamas will help Israel. On June 7, 2010, Dahlia Scheindlin published an article in the Huffington Post entitled “Dismantling Israel’s Myths,” which argues that Israel lacked morality, was not being fair, and was violating international law and the human rights of the people of Gaza by not letting the Flotilla in. She also claimed that Israel is starving Gazans, that Israel controls Gaza, and stated that Israel should end the Gaza Blockade. And on May 3, 2010, Dahlia Scheindlin published an article entitled “Israel: Old or Young,” where she bemoans the fact that Jews live in East Jerusalem, asserted that Israel is primitive because feminism is a dirty word for many Israelis (without providing proof that this is the case), claims falsely that the Knesset is proposing two “dangerously anti-democratic bills,” said that Israel has engaged in immoral acts, and made the assertion that nationalists Israelis who want to defend Israel have a “hegemonic, monolithic narrative.”

Dr. Gish Amit:

Dr. Gish Amit wrote his doctoral thesis at Ben-Gurion University on “Institutionalized Looting-----The Story of Palestinian Books in the National Library in Jerusalem.” He has also lectured in the Hebrew literature department at Ben-Gurion University. On September 10, 2010, there was a performance in Malmo, Sweden entitled “Return from the Moon,” which Dr. Amit helped to write. This performance was an “experiential performance” that included a “ten-minute long monologue, delivered by the fictional character Rivka, the ghost of return. Rivka also appears in the artist film Mary Koszmary, which is part of the exhibition, where the Polish leftist activist Slawomir Sierakowski referred to her in a speech when he was calling for the return of three million Jews back to their homeland----Poland.”

Also, in March 2010, Dr. Amit spoke in front of the 7^th Annual Conference of “Past is present: settler colonialism in Palestine,” which was jointly sponsored by the SOAS Palestine Society and the London Middle East Institute. His SOAS lecture was entitled “Chronicles of Cultural Destruction: The Appropriation of Palestinian Knowledge during the 1948 war.” Anti-Israel Israeli activists such as Dr. Ilan Pappe, Dr. Gabriel Piterberg, Amos Oz, Dr. Gershon Shafir, and Dr. Eyal Weizman also spoke at this SOAS conference. On January 17, 2009, right in the middle of the Gaza War, Dr. Amit signed onto a petition published in the Guardian that called upon the EU to sanction Israel; for the world to join Venezuela and Bolivia in protesting Israeli policies by cutting off diplomatic relations with Israel; and for people to boycott Israeli goods and institutions. Also in the middle of the Gaza War, Dr. Amit signed onto a petition that called upon the UN Security Council place sanctions against Israel, for the international community to prosecute Israelis for war crimes, and for the EU to put sanctions on Israel and to cease discussion about upgrading diplomatic relations. On April 1, 2008, Dr. Amit spoke at Zochrot, which is an Israeli organization dedicating to remembering the Nakba and supports a Palestinian right of return. The lecture was entitled “A strange memorial: A meeting with Gish Amit,” which sought to “raise profound questions concerning relations between looting and saving and between destruction and conservation” relating to the “about 30,000 books belonging to Palestinians from the abandoned neighborhoods of West Jerusalem.” Also in 2008, he presented a paper at the 24^th Annual Conference of the Association for Israel Studies at New York University. The paper was entitled “A strange monument: the appropriation of Palestinian books during the 1948 war from a contemporary perspective.”

DR. MAYA ROSENFELD:

Dr. Maya Rosenfeld teaches at both the Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She is also currently teaching some courses at Ben-Gurion University. She is the author of Confronting the Occupation: Work, Education, and Political Activism of Palestinian Families in a Refugee Camp. Aside from that, she is part of the Middle East Unit of the Harry Truman Institute for the Advancement of Peace and participated in a conference of the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute entitled “The Politics of Humanitarianism in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.”

On December 29, 2010, Dr. Rosenfeld will speak as part of a Hebrew University panel that present a report (See below) entitled “When the exception becomes the rule: Incommunicado Holding of Palestinian Detainees,” which was put out by the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel. This report is written by Dr. Rosenfeld and claims that Israel tortures and mistreats Palestinian prisoners. According to NGO Monitor, the Public Committee against Torture in Israel’s attorney referred to Palestinian “martyrs” and Israeli “collective punishment” during their testimony before the Goldstone Report. They also petitioned Spain to not impose limits on universal jurisdiction, so that Israelis can be tried for “war crimes” in Spanish courts. While the Public Committee against Torture in Israel routinely supports Palestinian prisoners, who are accused of engaging in terrorist attacks against Israelis, they invest almost no resources into helping Gilad Shalit, who has committed no crime at all whatsoever. The CEO of the Public Committee against Torture was also formerly involved with Yesh Gvul, which is an organization that supports Refusniks, and was also a Hadash party candidate for the 17^th Knesset.

On February 17, 2009, Dr. Rosenfeld referred (see below) to a report written about UNRWA by the respectable researcher Dr. Barry Rubin as “written in the style of the cheapest and most arrogant propaganda” and claimed that his text was “replete with absurd, indeed fanatic and sickening allegations against UNRWA,” just because his report did not agree with her political ideology. In Dr. Rosenfeld’s report, instead of addressing the legitimate issue of how UNRWA employees have been found to also be working for Palestinian terrorist organizations or how UNRWA has perpetuated the Palestinian refugee crisis by working to keep the Palestinians as refugees until a Palestinian right of return to Israel proper is implemented instead of working for the Palestinians to be settled as equal citizens in Arab countries, just personally attacked the messenger instead of dealing with the message. Dr. Rosenfeld also did not treat Arlene Kushner’s report that essentially agreed with Dr. Rubin’s conclusions much better. According to Dr. Rosenfeld, Kushner engaged in “incitement,” is an “ultra-nationalist” and works for an “extreme right wing” media just for expressing political opinions that contradicted Dr. Rosenfeld. But as if these derogatory and unprofessional insults towards a respectable scholar and journalist was not bad enough, right in the middle of the Gaza War, on January 5, 2009, the Palestinian Campaign for an Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel reported that Dr. Rosenfeld signed onto a petition entitled “A call from within,” which accused Israel of committing war crimes, called for the international community to intervene to stop “criminal Israeli” policies, called for the UN Security Council to impose sanctions on Israel, for the world to prosecute Israelis for “war crimes,” and for the EU to impose sanctions and cease talks of upgrading relations with Israel.

DR. DAPHNA GOLAN AGNON:

Dr. Daphna Golan Agnon teaches in the faculty of law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her husband, Dr. Amotz Agnon, also teaches at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Dr. Amotz Agnon supports students and lecturers that refuse to serve in the IDF, is in favor of a Palestinian right of return, in addition to believing that Israel is guilty of colonialism. In addition, her son, Uri Agnon, has been involved in the Sheikh Jarrah demonstrations and believes that Israel has engaged in both criminal and racist actions against the Palestinians. Her daughter has also been active in the Sheikh Jarrah demonstrations.

Dr. Daphna Golan is a founder of B’tselem, in addition to being active in Bat Shalom.    According to NGO Monitor, B’tselem “has faced serious criticism for its misinterpretations of international law, inaccurate research, and skewed statistics.”   B’tselem has also been criticized for minimizing Israeli security concerns and for only reporting on human rights abuses that occur from within the Palestinian territories, and not from within Israel proper.  Bat Shalom supports dividing Jerusalem, believes that all Israeli settlements violate international law and are contrary to peace; supports a Palestinian right of return and believes that Israel is responsible for the Palestinian refugee problem, and supports an Israeli withdrawal from the Sheba Farms and Golan Heights.

Dr. Daphna Golan Agnon signed onto a petition supporting students and lecturers that refuse to serve in the Palestinian territories.   In a lecture given in Istanbul on May 27, 2010, which was hosted by the United Nations Public Forum in Support of the Palestinian People, Dr. Daphna Golan Agnon accused Israel of discriminating against Palestinians.   She has also participated in hundreds of other pro-Palestinian demonstrations.   During the Gaza War, she forcibly tore down signs on Hebrew University’s Givat Ram campus that supported the IDF.   Dr. Daphna Golan Agnon supports a Palestinian right of return, often compares Israel to apartheid in South Africa, and does not support Israel existing as a Jewish state.

DR. BASHIR BASHIR

Dr. Bashir Bashir is a research fellow at the Gilo Centre for Citizenship at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, where he co-chairs a research group on public policy and multiculturalism in Israel, in addition to being an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is also currently a guest lecturer at Syracuse University. Dr. Bashir received his PhD in Political Theory from the Government Department at the London School of Economics, where he also taught. The title of his PhD thesis was “Reconciling Historically Excluded and Disadvantaged Groups: Deliberative Democracy, Recognition, and the Politics of Reconciliation.” During the 2005-2006 academic years, Dr. Bashir completed a fellowship at the Forum for Philosophy and Public Policy in Philosophy at Queen’s University in Canada, where he also taught. Dr. Bashir has co-edited both “The Holocaust in Israel’s Public Discourse: Between the Perpetuation of Victimhood and the Promise of Civility” and “The Politics of Reconciliation in Multicultural Societies.”

On November 8, 2010, Dr. Bashir gave a talk in the United States on “alternatives to partition,” which advocated a one-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Such advocacy equals the elimination of Israel as a Jewish state. The talk was sponsored by Justice for Palestine at Harvard Law School, Harvard College Palestine Solidarity Committee, the Arab Caucus at Harvard Kennedy School, and the Palestine Caucus at Harvard Kennedy School. He also gave a similar talk on November 17, 2010 as part of the PARCC Conversations in Conflict series. In 2009, Dr. Bashir gave an interview where he advocated a one-state solution to the conflict, claimed that Israel terrorizes Palestinian children and deprives Palestinians of the opportunity to live in peace, asserted that Israel was not serious about peace, and claimed that Israel engages in “tribalism and pathological narcissism.” And in 2008, Dr. Bashir promoted the Palestinian right of return.

Dr. Tamar Yarom

Dr. Tamar Yarom was born in Jaffa in 1971. She graduated from the London Film School in 1999. Dr. Yarom is currently a professor in the college of the arts at Hebrew University. She has made two films. The first one, Sob Skirt, is based on her experiences serving in the IDF during the Second Intifada. The second one, To See If I’m Smiling, is a documentary which focused on the testimonies of six female soldiers who served in the IDF during the Second Intifada. Both films have a political agenda of trying to portray Israel’s presence in the Palestinian territories as that of a cruel occupation where Israel systematically abuses Palestinian human rights.

Dr. Yarom admits that she coordinated with B’tselem as part of her work during an interview that she gave in Croatia. According to NGO Monitor, “B’tselem has faced serious criticism for its misrepresentation of international law, inaccurate research, and skewed statistics.” B’tselem regularly minimizes Israeli security concerns and deliberately chooses to not report on human rights violations that happen within mainland Israel. The executive director of B’tselem, Jessica Montell, believes that the situation in the West Bank is worse than apartheid and one former employee of B’tselem, Lizi Sagie, compared Israel to Nazism, claimed that Israel exploits the memory of the Holocaust for political gain, and called Israel’s Memorial Day a “pornographic circus of glorifying grief and silencing voices.”

DR. NURIT PELED-ELHANAN‏

Dr. Nurit Peled Elhanan is a lecturer in language and education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, as well as at Tel Aviv University and David Yellin Teacher’s College. Dr. Peled Elhanan is the daughter of Mattityahu Peled, who was a late general, scholar and politician who quit the IDF two years after the Six Days War because of his objection to the peace process not starting immediately in 1967. In the 1970’s, Mattityahu Peled was amongst the first in Israel to advocate granting the Palestinians a state. Dr. Nurit Peled Elhanan is also married to Rami Elhanan, who is a co-founder of Israeli-Palestinian Bereaved Parents for Peace and who was on the Jewish flotilla to Gaza. Dr. Elhanan’s daughter, Smadar Elhanan, was the victim of a suicide bombing attack on Ben-Yehuda Street in Jerusalem in 1997. Dr. Elhanan indirectly blames the “Israeli oppression of Palestinians” for her daughter’s death. She is also a founder of the International Committee on Education and Occupation.

Right after the Flotilla, Dr. Elhanan claimed that Israel’s behavior towards the Turkish flotilla was similar to that of Sodom and Gomorrah. In April 2010, Dr. Elhanan was one of the co-initiators of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine, which sought to pressure governments to take a pro-Palestinian stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In March 2010, Dr. Elhanan announced that she will mourn on Nakba Day, that Orthodox Jewish settlers are “wicked invaders,” that the demonstrators who disturb the peace in the West Bank are “heroes,” that dozens of Israeli laws are “racist,” and that there is nothing to celebrate on Israel’s Independence Day. In February 2010, Dr. Elhanan spoke for the Alternative Information Center on “Israeli Racist Education.” During the one year anniversary of the Gaza War, Dr. Elhanan gave a speech in Tel Aviv where she referred to what happened in Gaza as a “slow annihilation” and claimed that Israel is teaching her children to become murderers. In December 2009, it was announced that Dr. Elhanan was set to participate in the Gaza Freedom March, which sought to break the siege on Gaza and open the borders despite the fact that Hamas is in power. In 2009, she addressed the European Parliament by condemning Israel, the UK, and the US while stating only positive things about Palestinians, Muslims, and Arabs, and claimed that it has been Palestinian women who have suffered the most thanks to Israel. Also in 2009, Dr. Elhanan participated in an interview where she stated explicitly that she cares more for the children of Gaza than the children of Sderot.

Dr. Dalit Baum

Dr. Dalit Baum is a professor of gender studies and world economy at Haifa University and Beit Berl College. Dr. Dalit Baum has also taught at the University of California at San Diego, the University of California at Santa Cruz, and at the University of California at Berkeley. Although she is trained in the field of mathematics, she usually teaches in the field of women’s studies, the global economy, and activism. We could not find any evidence for the existence of academic books by Dr. Dalit Baum.

Dr. Dalit Baum is active in a series of radical anti-Israel groups. For starters, she is active in the International Solidarity Movement. According to NGO Monitor, the International Solidarity Movement’s co-founders support both violent and non-violent acts of “Palestinian resistance” and believe that it is “noble” to carry out suicide bombings. ISM played a prominent role in the Free Gaza flotilla, which attempted to break the Israeli naval blockade on Gaza and engaged in violent confrontation with Israel. ISM has been responsible for endangering the lives of many foreign nationals, amongst them Rachel Corrie and Tom Hurndall, who were both killed while participating in ISM activities. ISM has been active in violent demonstrations against the Security Barrier in the West Bank and attempted to help terrorists take refuge in the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem in 2002. In 2003, it was founded that the terrorists who attacked the Mike’s Place Bar in Tel Aviv had connections with ISM and utilized links with ISM activists to cover their treks. In March 2003, a senior Islamic Jihad terrorist was arrested while hiding in ISM’s Jenin Office and being aided by two ISM activists.

But unfortunately, ISM is not the only extremist group that Dr. Dalit Baum is active in. In fact, Dr. Baum helped create the group Black Laundry, which calls for “Israeli apartheid” to be eliminated. Black Laundry describes itself as “a direct action group of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, and others against the occupation.” Its slogan is “transgender, not transfer.” Interestingly, CLAF, the main lesbian feminist organization in Israel, refuses to have any thing to do with them. Black Laundry, while constantly condemning Israel for mistreating homosexuals and protesting Israel’s supposed mistreatment of Palestinians, has never bothered to go to the PA to protest the mistreatment of homosexuals there, where the oppression of homosexuals is far more severe than any thing that happens inside Israel or thanks to Israel.

Black Laundry’s main contributor is Coalition of Women for Peace, where Dr. Baum is the project coordinator of “who profits from the occupation.” According to NGO Monitor, Coalition of Women for Peace is committed to the “struggle to end the occupation,” refers to the Security Barrier as an “apartheid wall,” celebrated Nakba Day on Israel’s Independence Day, supports the BDS movement, supports Refusniks, and has lobbied the British government to “prosecute Israeli war criminals.” As part of her work with Coalition of Women for Peace, Dr. Baum spoke at the London School of Economics at a seminar entitled “the occupation of Palestine: who profits and who doesn’t” in 2009. The talk was hosted by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

Dr. Baum is also active in Anarchists against the Wall, “a direct action group” that was established in response to Israel’s construction of the security barrier on “Palestinian land occupied in the West Bank.” The Anarchists “works in cooperation with Palestinians in a joint popular struggle against the occupation.” Since its formation, Anarchists against the Wall has “participated in hundreds of demonstrations and direct actions against the wall specifically, and the occupation generally, all over the West Bank.”

In November 2010, Dr. Dalit Baum presented to the Russell Tribunal on Palestine that G4S is aiding her country in “war crimes” by providing equipment for “checkpoints, prisons, and illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.” Also in November 2010, she gave a lecture that promoted flotillas, boycotts, demonstrations, and other direct actions to support the Palestinian “struggle.” On February 11, 2010, Dr. Baum gave a lecture at the University of California at Berkeley entitled “who profits from the occupation? Holding cooperation’s accountable.” And right in the middle of the Gaza War, Dr. Dalit Baum tried to illegally enter Gaza to show solidarity to the people there with a group from Physicians for Human Rights-Israel.

Merav Amir is a PhD candidate at Tel Aviv University, a fellow at the Cohn Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Ideas, and the research coordinator of “who profits from the occupation,” which is a project run by the Coalition of Women for Peace. According to NGO Monitor, Coalition of Women for Peace is committed to the “struggle to end the occupation,” refers to the Security Barrier as an “apartheid wall,” celebrated Nakba Day on Israel’s Independence Day, supports the BDS movement, supports Refusniks, and has lobbied the British government to “prosecute Israeli war criminals.”

However, the leadership position held by Merav Amir with the Coalition of Women for Peace is not our only issue with her. In October 2010, Merav Amir wrote a report claiming that Israeli banks finance criminal activities in the Palestinian territories. In July 2010, Merav Amir co-authored an article in Jewish Peace News with Dr. Dalit Baum where BDS was promoted, Israel was referred to as an apartheid state, Israel was accused of economically exploiting and repressing the Palestinians via military control, etc. In June 2010, Merav Amir told the EU that even if they fund civilian projects in Israel, it would still result in the oppression of Palestinians, hoping that such a statement would stop the EU from funding Israel through the “framework program” for scientific research, which is the largest allocation of money that the EU invests in Israel. In August 2009, Merav Amir was interviewed for an article entitled “who profits from the Israeli occupation” that advocated boycotting Ahava Dead Sea products and she reinforced the interviewer in supporting BDS. And in November 2008, Merav Amir was quoted in an article as referring to Israel’s presence in the Palestinian territories as an “illegal occupation” and called upon companies to have “nothing to do with the occupation.”

Matan Kaminer

Matan Kaminer is a teaching assistant to Prof' Haim Hazan of Anthropology at Tel Aviv University. He is a radical activist and conscientious objector who was among the 5 IDF conscripts convicted for refusal to serve, together with Haggai Matar, son of TAU Dr. Anat Matar. He is also the grandson of the leading radical activist Reuven Kaminer, member of Hadash party, was Vice-Provost of the School for Overseas Students, Hebrew University . In the words of anti-Israel Jewish Prof' Joel Benin of Stanford University, Reuven Kaminer "was a powerful influence during a turbulent period in which I reevaluated much of what I thought I knew" when Benin took graduate studies at Hebrew University. Reuven Kaminer believes that critics of Israeli leftists should not have a right to express their opinions, and that Israel is engaging in politicide against the Palestinians. Matan kaminer is also the grandson of Dafna Kaminer, who is the founder of Women in Black and holds vigils weekly against “the occupation and settlements.”

In 2010, Matan Kaminer signed onto a letter to the German political party Die Linke, where a group of anti-Israel Israeli activists accused Israel of violating international law and committing war crimes, of being an occupying power, and of being racist. They went on to call upon Germany to stop selling weapons to Israel, to stop upgrading relations with Israel, to bar Israeli goods made in settlements in the EU, to support trying Israelis for war crimes, and to support anti-Israel activists. In 2009, Matan Kaminer also signed onto a letter stating that it is not anti-Semitic to boycott Israel and that it is a dishonor to the victims of the Holocaust “to use its memory as a bludgeon to silence principled critics of Israel’s unconscionable treatment of Palestinians.” In 2007, Matan Kaminer was published as stating “the Israeli-Palestinian struggle must be seen as a colonial conflict with a strong anomaly, that anomaly being that the Jewish-Israeli colonialists […] differ in many respects from other populations of colonists.” In 2005, Matan Kaminer was published as stating in response to accusations that he was a traitor for refusing to serve in the IDF, “If they consider me a traitor to the racist Israeli state that commits war crimes against the occupied Palestinians and one that oppresses its own people as well, then yes, I am a traitor to these causes. [….] I do not recognize the state of Israel as a moral authority.” In January 2004, Matan Kaminer was sentenced to 12 months in prison for refusing to serve in the IDF.

Eyal (Niv) Clyne

Eyal (Niv) Clyne was last year a teaching assistant to Prof' Haim Hazan at Tel Aviv University and is an independent researcher who runs his own blog. He has been active in anti-Israel organizations such as Physicians for Human Rights---Israel, the Israeli Committee against House Demolitions, and Breaking the Silence. According to NGO Monitor, PHR-I claims that they work to “uncover Israel’s mechanisms of bureaucratic violence which is hidden from the public eye.” They have referred to the IDF as the “Israeli occupation forces” and allege that Israeli physicians do not report on Palestinian prisoners being tortured. PHR-I provides “first aid training to violent protesters at the security barrier near Bil’in.” As for the Israeli Committee against House Demolitions, NGO Monitor reports that Jeff Halper, who heads this NGO, routinely accuses Israel of engaging in “apartheid,” and his organization routinely accuses Israel of engaging in “ethnic cleansing and state terrorism.” ICAHD supports BDS and the Durban Strategy, and during the 2007 UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, ICAHD’s representative referred to “Israeli crimes, including its bloody and sadistic actions in Gaza and its atrocities.” According to NGO Monitor, Breaking the Silence is not much better than the other two organizations that Eyal Clyne was involved in, for Breaking the Silence is active in accusing Israel of committing war crimes, had members who sought to break Israel’s siege on Gaza with the Jews for Justice for Palestinians boat Irene, and Breaking the Silence actively collects testimonies from former IDF soldiers with the objective of painting Israel in a negative light.

On December 16, 2010, Eyal Clyne spoke at an event sponsored by the University College London’s Friend’s of Palestine group. The event was entitled “why I am an activist?” Eyal Clyne claimed that he grew up in a situation where the occupation exists and can imagine Palestinians who don’t know what freedom means for they are born into this situation like him. He claimed that Israel justifies every thing with security but that this is problematic for there are cracks in this story. He claimed that house demolitions are a crack, for over 20,000 Palestinian homes have been demolished and ninety percent of them are not demolished for security reasons but because they lack a permit. He did not site a source for this statistic nor did he explain why these people were denied permits. Then, there is the fence, whose name was changed according to Clyne so that Israel would not be accused of engaging in “apartheid.” He claimed that Israel is trying to explain this fence with security explanations, but if one looks into the fence project, it is three times as long as green line and 80 percent of the fence is located inside the West Bank, implying in his view that security has nothing to do with the fence. Clyne did not mention how the fence has saved countless Israeli lives and how Israelis living in Judea and Samaria or East Jerusalem would not have received security protection if the fence was built along the green line. He mentioned how checkpoints separate Palestinian lands, how settlements in his view have nothing to do with security, and how confiscating lands has no security logic. By stating this, he ignored numerous IDF studies which show that the settlements combined with holding onto Judea and Samaria has enhanced Israeli security. According to Clyne, the main issue is a “story of exclusivity.” He claimed that he grew up in an “illusion” that he is living in a democracy. Of course, he did not mention how Palestinian terrorism led Israelis to wanting to be separated from Palestinians. Nevertheless, these things caused Clyne to reach three conclusions. The first is that he can’t trust Israel as an Israeli. Saying this in the UK of course enhances anti-Israel sentiment there, for if an Israeli can’t trust Israel, then how can a British person trust Israel? The second one is that certain things are beyond politics and that Israel’s actions put Israelis in danger for Israel ignores “issues of justice, human rights, and freedom.” He did not provide evidence regarding how Israel’s actions put Israelis in danger nor did he mention how Palestinians have ignored Jewish human rights and how Arab nations have ignored issues of justice for Jewish refugees from Arab lands. Nor did he mention how Israel offered the Palestinians the opportunity to be a state in the past but how the Palestinians rejected it. The third one is that he doesn’t want people to get away with things. Clyne claimed that he “saw perpetrators in Hebron” do “horrific things.” For example, he claimed that a settler smashed the teeth of a four-year-old Palestinian child and that no one bothered to investigate it. He also claimed that he was working 24-7 helping out Palestinians during the Gaza War, where he claimed that Israel shot at children. Of course, he never mentioned how Palestinians who sent rockets to kindergartens and synagogues have never been prosecuted and provided zero evidence that Israel deliberately targeted children during Operation Cast Lead. Eyal Clyne concluded the youtube video by stating that it is important not to give the situation a title and that it is more important to focus on details, like how many people support ethnic cleansing. Based on his video, one would never know that the primary actors who are calling for ethnic cleansing are the Hamas organization, who publicly state that unless a Jew lived in Israel before WWI that Jew did not have a right to live in Israel.

Also in December 2010, Eyal Clyne claimed on his blog that a Hebron settler physically assaulted a Breaking the Silence activist and that Hebron settlers “repeatedly and violently targeted” Breaking the Silence tour guides. He claimed that the Hebron settlers were “terrified” that human rights activists might gain an understanding of what they are doing to “innocent Palestinians.” He claimed that most of the Hebron settler’s Arab neighbors are “subjected to cruel, continuous violence to the point where their everyday lives become unbearable that many eventually decide to leave their homes.” Clyne referred to the settlers as “terrorists” and claimed that the police took zero action against such violence. Thus, Eyal Clyne is in denial about how Palestinians and Breaking the Silence often provoke settlers.

But as if that is not bad enough, in October 2010, Eyal Clyne discouraged Jewish parents from sending their children on the Birthright Israel program supposedly because Israel indoctrinates them to be pro-Israel activists and does not show the Arab narrative. He ignores the fact that there areBirthright Israel groups that have visited Bedouin encampments before. Clyne also claims that Israel indoctrinates Jewish Diaspora kids for militaristic purposes, yet does not note that many of the events that Birthright does are apolitical, such as going on hikes or swimming or doing community service projects that benefit every one such as working in a hospital or going camel-back riding, and that Birthright kids don’t always meet IDF officials. The author of this article that quoted Eyal Clyne’s blog in full went on to call upon Jewish parents to send their children on the Birthright Unplugged program instead, despite the fact that Birthright Unplugged has a clear political agenda of having participants “develop an understanding of daily life under occupation and apartheid,” actively encourages their participants to support boycotting Israel, and except for a meeting with the Ibdaa Cultural Center, which has a clear political agenda as demonstrated by their participation in the Durban Conference, does not have a single cultural event or trip to see natural beauty on their itinerary. Also, in 2009, Eyal Clyne participated in a protest that declared that Yisrael Beiteinu was racist and blamed Ariel Sharon for the Second Intifada, despite the fact that Palestinian officials have admitted to the fact that the whole Second Intifada was planned by them ahead of time.

Dr. Aeyal Gross

Dr. Aeyal Gross has taught in Tel Aviv University’s law school since 1996. He received his SJD from Harvard University in 1996. He formerly taught at Columbia University, the University of Toronto, the University of London, and at Harvard University. In 1995, he was an intern with the European Commission on Human Rights in Strasbourg. He also was a member of Tel Aviv University’s Minerva Center for Human Rights, in addition to being a fellow at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies in South Africa. He is currently a board member of the Concord Center for the Interplay between International Norms and Israeli Law. He is one of the authors of Implementing Social Rights.

Dr. Gross was a member of the board of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel. According to NGO Monitor, ACRI filed a petition in 2009 where they referred to Road 443 as an “apartheid road.” ACRI evidently routinely claims that Israel is engaging in “apartheid” and “collective punishment” and “violations of basic principles of international law.” In 2009, ACRI claimed that Israel’s annexation of East Jerusalem was illegal. ACRI also asserted that it is problematic to define Israel as a Jewish state.

But as if that was not bad enough, Dr. Gross is also on the advisory board of Human Rights Watch. NGO Monitor claims that based on their systematic analyses of this particular organization, their Israel-related publications “lack credibility” and the condemnations of Israel are “highly disproportionate.” Human Rights Watch has been active in supporting boycotts against Israel. In October 2009, Human Rights Watch founder Robert Bernstein published an article in the New York Times criticizing the organization that he founded “for ignoring severe human rights violations in closed societies, for its anti-Israel bias, and for issuing reports that are helping those wishing to turn Israel into a pariah state.”

In October 2009, Dr. Gross gave a talk entitled “The Indeterminacies of Occupation,” when he recently stated that “Israel is a society where shooting of children of the other is the norm.” In September 2009, Dr. Gross published an article in Hebrew on YNET where he claimed that the construction of the Security Barrier was illegal, referred to the Palestinian territories as “occupied,” that Israel is violating international law by building settlements, and where he claimed that Norway did the right thing by deciding to boycott a company that was helping Israel with the construction of the Security Barrier. In March 2009, Dr. Gross spoke in a pro-Palestinian event at SOAS organized by the Association of the Palestinian Community, London, where he participated in a panel on humanitarian law issues related to the Gaza War. During the Gaza War, Dr. Gross wrote an Update on Gaza for Physicians for Human Rights----Israel, Al Mezan Center, and the Palestinian Medical Relief Society, where he blamed Israel for Gaza’s poor healthcare system, claimed that Israel issued threats to Palestinian civilians, and that Israel has violated international law by targeting civilian and medical facilities.

Dr. Moshe Zuckermann

Dr. Moshe Zuckermann was born in 1949 in Tel Aviv to Polish Jewish Holocaust survivors. In 1960, his family immigrated to Germany, but he returned to Israel after 21 years. He is a professor of history and philosophy at Tel Aviv University. From 2000 to 2005, Dr. Zuckermann was the director of the Institute of German History at Tel Aviv University. Since 2010, he is the scientific director of the Sigmund Freud Foundation in Vienna. He is one of the authors of Infected Landscapes: Israel----Broken Promised Land, in addition to a number of other books written in German and Hebrew.

On October 24, 2010, Dr. Zuckermann gave a lecture in Berlin where he claimed that it was only a matter of time “until the Zionist project cease to exist as a result of its wrong occupation policies and its own internal problems.” Also in 2010, Dr. Zuckermann participated in a lecture series in Norway that helped to try and influence Norway University to boycott Israel. In 2009, Dr. Zuckermann signed onto a petition to the Israeli government, calling for the “Israeli occupation, settlements, and the blockade of Palestinian territories to come to an end.” In 2008, he signed an anti-Israel petition that commemorated “Palestinians who have been depopulated, dispossessed, humiliated, tortured, and murdered by Zionists.” This petition was organized by RightiousJews.org. And Dr. Zuckermann also signed onto a petition of Israeli university professors that said that they would encourage their students to break the law by refusing to serve in the Palestinian territories during their army service.

Dr. Roy Wagner

Dr. Roy Wagner is a math and computer science lecturer at the Academic College of Tel Aviv-Jaffa. He is also a philosophy fellow at Tel Aviv University’s CohnInstitute.for the History and Philosophy of Science and Ideas. Dr. Wagner received his PhD from Tel Aviv University in mathematics.

Dr. Roy Wagner is a member of Anarchists against the Wall. Anarchists against the Wall is “a direct action group” that was established in response to Israel’s construction of the security barrier on “Palestinian land occupied in the West Bank.” The Anarchists against the Wall group “works in cooperation with Palestinians in a joint popular struggle against the occupation.” Since its formation, Anarchists against the Wall has “participated in hundreds of demonstrations and direct actions against the Israeli security forces around the wall specifically, and the occupation generally, all over the West Bank.” Dr. Roy Wagner represented the Anarchists against the Wall group at a symposium in the French Senate in June 2010, where pro-Palestinian non-governmental organizations sought to promote the Palestinian cause. He spoke on “the joint Palestinian-Israeli popular struggle” against the “occupation.” The fact that he was Israeli was used to legitimize the Palestinian cause in the French Parliament and delegitimize Israel. Dr. Roy Wagner has also been active in numerous violent Anarchists against the Wall demonstrations in the West Bank, where he has been placed in charge of instructing Israeli and international new demonstrators. In one such demonstration in 2009, Dr. Roy Wagner went as far as celebrating Christmas with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine at a demonstration.

But as if that was not bad enough, Dr. Roy Wagner signed a BDS petition that referred to Israel as anti-homosexual and an apartheid state, and called upon the international homosexual community to boycott Israel in 2009. He also signed a petition right in the middle of the Gaza War that accused Israel of war crimes, referred to Israeli policy during the Gaza War as criminal, and called upon the UN Security Council to put sanctions on Israel; for international actors to prosecute Israelis for war crimes; and for the EU to cease discussion on upgrading ties with Israel.

Prof. RACHEL GIORA:

On September 20, 2010, Prof. Giora gave a lecture in Tel Aviv explaining why people should boycott Israel. On July 1, 2010, Prof. Giora wrote an article where she argued that thanks to the BDS movement, Israel will be given the choice of changing her policies or collapsing, and Prof. Giora is content with this reality. In May 2010 Prof' Rachel Giora together with Dr. Anat Matar of Tel Aviv University and Dr. Kobi Snitz of Weizmann Institute, wrote an Open Letter to the Boston Museum of Science objecting to sponsorship of "Israeli propaganda" during Israel Innovation Week. In April 2010, Prof. Giora signed onto a letter to the CRH management in Ireland, telling them to “divest from Israeli apartheid.” In May 2010 the OECD ministerial committee voted on the admission of Israel as a member of the organization and Prof' Giora signed a petition "Israeli Citizens Say: Do Not Approve Israel's OECD Membership Until It Abides by International Law." In January 2010, Prof. Giora wrote an article on BDS where she discussed the history of Israeli involvement in supporting boycotts against Israel. According to the article, Prof. Giora admitted that the major role that Israelis play in the BDS movement is to give it legitimacy against attacks that boycotts against Israel are anti-Semitic, in addition to showing solidarity with the Palestinians who are protesting the “criminal occupation.” She also argued that Israel is an apartheid state and that BDS should remain in place so long as Israel controls any of the territories that she captured in 1967. Prof. Giora also accused Abbas of betraying the Palestinian struggle by withdrawing support temporally from the Goldstone Report. In an article published in Haaretz, Prof. Giora came out in support of Dr. Neve Gordon’s call for boycotting Israel and was highly critical of Prof. Carmi for being upset at how he embarrassed Ben-Gurion University. In 2009, Prof. Giora signed onto a letter sent to Madonna, Leonard Cohen, telling them not to perform in Tel Aviv. Also in 2009, Prof. Giora sent a letter to BRICUP’s pre-UCU Congress, praising them for supporting BDS against Israel, and signed onto a petition telling the Barcelona Department for International Cooperation to cancel the twinning agreement between Barcelona and Tel Aviv. Prof. Giora also co-signed a letter to the EU, telling them to suspend trade agreements with Israel after the Gaza War. And Prof. Giora also was a leader in trying to get Princeton University to boycott Israel.

Dr. Kobi Snitz:

Dr. Kobi Snitz is currently employed as a Mathematician at the Weizmann Institute. He received his PHD from the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Toronto. He completed his post-doctorate at Ben-Gurion University and the Technion. Dr. Kobi Snitz was formerly a teaching assistant in Toronto and was active in CUPE local 3902. While he was studying in the US, he was also active in teaching assistant drives and in opposing US policies. Dr. Kobi Snitz returned to Israel in 2003.

Dr. Kobi Snitz is a member of Anarchists against the Wall, where he plays the funct'ion of being the group’s historian and figurehead. Anarchists against the Wall is “a direct action group” that was established in response to Israel’s construction of the security barrier on “Palestinian land occupied in the West Bank.” The Anarchists against the Wall group “works in cooperation with Palestinians in a joint popular struggle against the occupation.” Since its formation, Anarchists against the Wall has “participated in hundreds of demonstrations and direct actions against the wall specifically, and the occupation generally, all over the West Bank.” Dr. Kobi Snitz has been arrested more than once due to his work with Anarchists against the Wall and claims that he admires Palestinians who have been arrested by Israel. In October 2010, Dr. Snitz was detained after participating in a violent demonstration near Hebron. In April 2010, he was arrested for trying to block the construction of the Security Barrier. In September 2009, he served 20 days in prison because of his refusal to pay a fine for his role in trying to prevent the IDF from demolishing an illegal home. In 2007, Dr. Snitz tried to interfere with the IDF arresting a Palestinian. That same year, he was also arrested and accused of causing property damage, amongst other charges, but was subsequently released. He also claimed in an interview that supporting the Palestinian struggle is his main reason for remaining in Israel.

Dr. Kobi Snitz has also been involved with the BDS movement. In May 2010, Dr. Kobi Snitz signed onto “Open Letter to the Boston Museum of Science objecting to sponsorship of Israeli propaganda,” which criticized the museum for having a one-week exhibit on Israeli technological innovations. In July 2009, Dr. Snitz signed onto the “Boycott from within” petition to UNICEF, where Israel was accused of engaging in apartheid and colonialism, and criticized UNICEF for being in a partnership with Motorola because of their role in “supporting Israeli aggression and colonialism.” In summer 2008, Dr. Kobi Snitz wrote an article for the anti-Israel organization Badil about Israelis who support the BDS movement. According to NGO Monitor, Badil regularly exploits human rights language by accusing Israel of engaging in “genocide” and routinely uses dehumanizing language in reference to Israel, such as accusing Israel of racism and ethnic cleansing. Badil has been active in trying to prosecute Israeli military officials abroad, supports a Palestinian right of return, and is a staunch supporter of BDS. In June 2008, Dr. Kobi Snitz attended the Haifa one state conference, where he discussed with Palestinian proponents of BDS on how Israelis can promote BDS from within.

Dr. Kobi Snitz was a protagonist in the film Budrus, as writen on the official page of Budrus, "Israeli mathematician who joined the demonstrations in Budrus because of his belief that direct action was missing in the Israeli peace movement at the time. “When we got about 200 meters from the soldiers, and they were armed… I was sure we were going to die. But there were others around me who weren’t even cowering. And gradually I got over my fear and got stronger from their strength and determination." Read Just Vision's interview.

However, Dr. Kobi Snitz’s radical positions do not end there. In 2007, Dr. Snitz went the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and gave a talk entitled “Bil’in, village of resistance.” In this lecture, he claimed that Israel had no right to build a wall to keep the terrorists out. In an article that Dr. Snitz wrote as well in 2007, Dr. Snitz referred to Israel as a criminal entity and claimed that it is racist to support the construction of the Security Barrier.

Dr. Ronit Lentin:

Dr. Ronit Lentin was born in Haifa before Israel was established, but has lived in Ireland since 1969. She currently heads the Sociology department at Trinity College, Dublin, in addition to being director of the masters program of philosophy in Race, Ethnicity, and conflict. She is also a founder and member of the Trinity Immigration Initiative. Dr. Lentin is the author of Co-Memory and Melancholia: Israelis Memorializing the Palestinian Nakba, Women and Politics of Military Confrontation: Palestinian and Israeli Gendered Narratives of Dislocation, and Thinking Palestine.

In October 2010, Dr. Ronit Lentin signed onto a letter addressed to Mike Leigh that was organized by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel. In this letter, Mike Leigh was thanked for withdrawing his participation in the Jerusalem Sam Spiegel Film School. In July 2010, Dr. Ronit Lentin signed a petition to Minister Gideon Sa’ar claiming that lecturers who support BDS should not be punished for their treasonous behavior. Also in July 2010, Dr. Lentin signed onto a petition organized by the Sheikh Jarrah Solidarity Movement, which referred to the proposed law against BDS as fascism, reaffirmed support of boycotting settlement products as well as companies that “profit from the occupation,” and asserted that the settlements are a crime against the Palestinian people. In January 2009, right in the middle of the Gaza War, Dr. Ronit Lentin signed onto an Israeli “call from within” petition that accused Israel of committing war crimes, referring to Israeli policy as “criminal,” called for the UN Security Council to impose sanctions on Israel, called upon the world to prosecute Israelis for war crimes, and called upon nations to not upgrade their ties with Israel. Also in 2009, Dr. Lentin signed onto the Jewish Appeal to support the Goldstone Report, which asserted support for Justice Goldstone’s findings, stated that the Israeli government should be held accountable for its crimes, and called for the Gaza War crimes allegations to be brought to the ICC unless a credible non-military institution in Israel investigates the war crimes allegations. Dr. Lentin has also received praise from the Coalition against Israeli Apartheid as well as Australians for Palestine, who in turn promotes her work.

Tel Aviv University:

Prof. Daniel Bar-Tal:

Prof. Daniel Bar-Tal teaches at the school of education at Tel Aviv University.   Bar-Tal was the former director of the Walter Lebach Research Institute for Jewish-Arab Coexistence through Education and was formerly co-editor in chief of the Palestine Israel Journal, which is partially sponsored by Hanan Ashwari.

Bar-Tal was also one of the leaders of the Israeli-Palestinian Schoolbook project entitled “Portrayal of the other,” which sought to analyze Israeli and Palestinian textbooks to see how they portray “the other” side.   Bar-Tal did not write about Palestinian school textbooks and story books portrayals of Jews, but he did have the audacity to assert that Israeli school textbooks and children’s story books “portray Palestinians and Arabs as “murderers,” “rioters,” “suspicious,” and generally “backward and unproductive,” amongst other negative traits, which led to the conclusion that “direct delegitimization and negative stereotyping of Palestinians and Arabs are the rule rather than the exception in Israeli schoolbooks.”



Bar-Tal is the author of Stereotypes and Prejudice in Conflict: Representations of Arabs in Israeli-Jewish Society, which argues that Israeli society negatively stereotypes Arabs and thus discriminates against them.   In this book, Bar Tal wrote, “For peace to be achieved in the Middle East, the Israelis must recognize their responsibility for the tragedy (Nakba) that they inflicted upon Palestinian in 1948. As long as the Israelis deny their collective guilt for the Palestinians becoming refugees and deny that the Palestinians were maliciously expelled by them, then all reconciliation is a pipe dream. Hence, Israel’s acknowledging Arab suffering is a key to reaching a settlement in the region. Embracing Zionist dogma is accordingly a main obstacle to peace. In short, holding such a Zionist narrative serves as an obstacle to peace since it promotes negative emotions, mistrust, delegitimatization and negative stereotypes of Arabs and Palestinians ……. Israeli Jews’ consciousness is characterized by a sense of victimization, a siege mentality, blind patriotism, belligerence, self-righteousness, dehumanization of Palestinians and insensitivity to their suffering.”

In May 2010, Bar-Tal evidently conducted a study where he claimed that Jewish Israelis prefer to live in “self-denial,” that they are “brainwashed” to hate Arabs, Muslims, Blacks, and Christians, etc.  Bar Tal was quoted as stating, “The political system and the education system use all their tools, such as Jerusalem Day, to socialize people with the idea that a unified Jerusalem is Israel’s eternal, indivisible capital. People are not born with a concept of ‘Jerusalem is ours forever’ and many know no political solution is possible without a compromise on Jerusalem.”  In March 2010, Bar-Tal was quoted as stating in Haaretz that “Jewish youth have not internalized basic democratic values.”  He went on to state that “there is a combination of fundamentalism, nationalism, and racism in the worldview of religious youth.”    Bar-Tal was also part of a group of Israeli academics that wrote to Education Minister Gideon Sa’ar, asking him to not take actions against lecturers that support boycotting Israel.   Evidently, at a conferenceat Tel Aviv University, Bar-Tal condemned imagined "right-wing" McCarthyite threats to Israeli democracy and freedom of speech.

Hebrew University:

Prof. Daphna Golan Agnon:

Prof. Daphna Golan Agnon teaches in the faculty of law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.  In 2005 Golan published a memoir entitled “Next Year in Jerusalem,” where she argued that Israel abuses Palestinian prisoners, in addition to claiming that the “occupation” is “persecuting Palestinians” and “destroying Israel from within.”  She is a founder of B’tselem, in addition to being the founding director of Bat Shalom, which supports dividing Jerusalem, believes that all Israeli settlements violate international law and are contrary to peace; supports a Palestinian right of return and believes that Israel is responsible for the Palestinian refugee problem, and supports an Israeli withdrawal from the Sheba Farms and Golan Heights.



In December 2010, Agnon wrote an editorial in Haaretz where she complained about the Gaza blockade, the existence of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, having separate legal systems for Israelis and Palestinians, claimed that Israel stole land from Palestinians, claimed that Israel is an apartheid state, and claimed that it was her right and duty to challenge Israeli law.  During that same month, Agnon wrote an article for the Israeli Occupation Archive that claimed that Israel arrested drummers and clowns that believe in nonviolence, that she attended a demonstration where her son was arrested, accused Israel of engaging in discriminatory practices, claimed that the arrested drummers were challenging a racist order, etc.

In 2009, NGO Monitor reported that Agnon participated in a UN mini-Durban Conference, where she consulted a programme claiming that Israel is an apartheid state.   Also in 2009, Agnon gave a lecture in Istanbul, which was hosted by the United Nations Public Forum in Support of the Palestinian People.   At this lecture, Agnon accused Israel of discriminating against Palestinians and criticized the evictions in Sheikh Jarrah.  During the Gaza War, she forcibly tore down signs on Hebrew University’s Givat Ram campus that supported the IDF.   In 2008, Agnon wrote an editorial in Haaretz where she criticized Israel for not talking to Hamas and Hezbollah, claimed that Israel imprisons one-fifth of the Palestinian population in violation of international law, compared Israel to South Africa under apartheid, stated that Gilad Shalit is in captivity because Israel is unwilling to listen to the Palestinian narrative, etc.   Agnon signed onto a petition supporting students and lecturers that refuse to serve in the Palestinian territories, supports a Palestinian right of return, and does not believe that Israel should be a Jewish state.

PROF. HAIM BRESHEETH:

Prof. Haim Bresheeth is a film studies scholar at the University of East London. He is part of the London One State Group, which opposes the two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict because it "denies Palestinian refugees their internationally recognized right of return.”   Bresheeth is also involved with the British Committee for the Universities of Palestine, which sent a letter to Leonard Cohen asking him to not perform in Israel and other BDS related activities.   They have also sent boats to Gaza, and Bresheeth can be seen on youtube interacting with the BRICUP members who participated in it.   On top of that, Bresheeth was part of a panel that gave a presentation to Jews against Zionism, where he blamed Israel that Palestinians “live in a combination of a concentration camp and Warsaw ghetto for so many years that we have stopped counting.”   Bresheeth also argued that the Zionist project is “about the dispossession and expulsion of the Palestinian population of Palestine” and called upon his audience to boycott Israel so that “more Israelis will come to their bloody senses.”

In May 2008, Bresheeth addressed the Nakba Day events at the University of East London.   He spoke as part the following panels: “Nakba: From Memory to Struggle,” ”Nakba on Film,” and “A State of Danger.”   In 2007, Bresheeth spoke for a SOAS Palestine Society Conference, where he spoke about “The Israeli and British media and the boycott issue” and “the British media and the Israel-Palestine Question.”   In 2006, PACBI reported that Bresheeth decided to stop chairing the Cinema South Film Festival in Israel due to his overall pro-BDS positions, despite the fact that he has spent years aiding that particular film festival.    And in December 2004, Bresheeth partook in a SOAS Palestine Society and Palestine Solidarity Campaign conference entitled “Resisting Israeli Apartheid: Strategies and Principles.” For this conference, Bresheeth presented a paper entitled “Stand Up and Be Counted,” where he argued that Israel was guilty of ethnic cleansing, compared Israel to the regimes of Saddam Hussein and Slobodan Milosevic, accused Israel of terrorizing the Arabs, referred to Israel as a “rogue and brutal state,” claimed that the international players leading the War against Terrorism are engaging in terrorism that is worse than Bin Ladin’s, called upon people to boycott Israel, Etc.   The Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs quoted Bresheeth as stating at this conference that “the occupation started in 1948” and that “there is no valid comparison between South Africa and Israel: Israel is much worse. South Africa exploited its native population while Israel expelled and committed genocide against its native population.”
