RE: Anat Biletzki from TAU calling Israel's military operation "A disproportionate response"

Dear BCC'd addressees,

The Tel Aviv University faculty member who wrote the email below (my
comments are interlinear in CAPS) demonstrates a strange and troubling
myopia.  I have commented on this myopia.

I most sincerely encourage you to pass this email and my comments on to your
lists, and especially to any of the signatories whom you may know.

I welcome responses, especially from Ms. Biletzki and other signatories.

David Meir-Levi

(dml:  TOO BAD WE DID NOT GET TO SEE ALL THE EMAILS THAT THIS WRITER AND HER
NUMEROUS SIGNATORES SENT OUT IN PROTEST OF THE REPEATED ARAB TERRORIST
KILLING OF ISRAELI CIVILIANS AND THE HORRIFIC SUFFERING OF A POPULATION
SUBJECT TO 28,000 TERROR ATTACKS DURING THE 11 YEARS AFTER THE PALESTINIAN
LEADERSHIP HAD SIGNED PEACE ACCORDS, KILLING 1700 ISRAELIS AND WOUNDING
ALMOST 7,000).

(dml: ODD. 40 YEAR OCCUPATION?  ISRAEL TOOK CONTROL OF THE WEST BANK AND
GAZA STRIP IN 1967.  IT RELINQUISHED CONTROL OVER MOST OF THOSE TERRITORIES
IN 1993.  BY 1994, 'EL RA'IS' YASSIR ARAFAT WAS IN CHARGE AND IN 1996 HE WAS
DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED TO HEAD THE PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY.  SO, ISRAELI
OCCUPATION ENDED 27 YEARS AFTER IT BEGAN.  I WONDER HOW SHE COMES UP WITH 40
YEARS?)

(dml:  HAMAS LEADERS WERE SHOWING SIGNS OF PRAGMATISM?  WHERE? WHAT DID I
MISS?  BEST OFFER I HEARD FROM HAMAS IS THAT THEY MIGHT, MAYBE, AGREE TO A
TEN YEAR TRUCE ONLY IF ISRAEL RETREATED TO THE 1967 ARMISTICE LINES....BUT
NO GUARANTEES THAT THE TRUCE WOULD GO ON AFTER THE TEN YEARS.  THIS IS
INDEED PRAGMATIC IN TERMS OF HAMAS' STATED GOALS.  IF THEY ARE GIVEN TEN
YEARS TO SAFELY BUILD UP THEIR RANKS AND IMPORT WEAPONRY....AND THEY REFUSE
TO AGREE TO PEACE, AND RETAIN THE RIGHT TO RE-START THE TERROR WAR IN YEAR
11....THEN ISRAEL'S AGREEMENT TO THIS TRUCE WOULD BE TANTAMOUNT TO GIVING
HAMAS THE GREEN LIGHT FOR FUTURE WAR.  PRAGMATIC?  FOR HAMAS, SURE!

BUT, THEN AGAIN, IF YOU CONSIDER THAT HAMAS' ENTRENCHED POSITION IS THE
TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF ISRAEL AND THE GENOCIDE OF BOTH ISRAEL'S JEWS AND ALL
THE REST OF WORLD JEWRY, PER THE HAMAS COVENANT, THEN....WELL, THEN... I
GUESS OFFERING A TEN-YEAR TRUCE IS A STEP TOWARD MODERATION.)

>Faculty for Israeli Palestinian Peace International (FFIPPI) insists on

>responsible for the safety and welfare of the civilian population.
>
(dml:  IT CONTINUES TO PUZZLE ME THAT I NEVER SAW ANY SUCH DEMANDS FROM THE
FFIPPI DURING THE 13 YEARS OF ARAB TERRORISM AFTER OSLO....TERRORISM THAT
VIOLATED THE 4TH GENEVA CONVENTION, AND UN RESOLUTIONS 181, 194, 232 AND
338, AND THE LAWS OF WAR, AND THE UN'S UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
  -- BY TARGETTING ISRAELI CIVILIANS AND USING ARAB CIVILIANS AS HUMAN
SHIELDS).

>
>FFIPPI condemns all forms of violence against civilians in both sides.
>FFIPPI holds that there is no justice and never will be peace or
>security until the Israeli occupation ends.

(dml: ODD. I GUESS THE WRITER AND SIGNATORIES DID NOT READ THE OSLO ACCORDS.
  THE ISRAELI 'OCCUPATION' ENDED IN 1994. THE LAST TANK LEFT RAMALLAH IN
1996. 96% OF ALL ARABS OF THE WEST BANK AND GAZA STRIP WERE UNDER
PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY CONTROL BY MID-1995.  BUT THE TERROR WAR WENT ON.  AND
EVEN AFTER ISRAEL UNILATERALLY AND UNCONDITIONALLY CEDED THE GAZA STRIP, THE
TERROR WAR CONTINUED WITH 1,200 QASSAM ROCKETS AND DOZENS OF ATTEMPTED
SUICIDE-BOMBER  ATTACKS AND CAR BOMBS AND TRUCK BOMBS AND ROADSIDE BOMBS AND
SNIPER ATTACKS AND KIDNAPPINGS.....EVEN THOUGH THE 'OCCUPATION' HAD ENDED).

While it considers resistance to
>occupation legitimate, FFIPPI promotes non-violent practices as the best
>path for justice and peace.

(dml: GREAT. TOO BAD THAT IRAN AND HAMAS AND ISLAMIC JIHAD AND HEZBOLLAH AND
THE PFLP AND THE DFLP AND THE PFLP-GC AND TANZIM AND FORCE 17 AND FATAH AND
THE DOZEN OR SO OTHER ARAB TERROR GANGS DO NOT LISTEN TO THE FFIPPI.)
>

>FFIPPI calls upon the Hamas led Palestinian government to declare that
>itS goal is not the destruction of  Israel. FFIPPI calls upon the Israeli
>government to declare its  acknowledgment of the Palestinian right to
>have a viable independent state within the 1967 borders.

(dml: AGAIN, VERY ODD.  THE WRITER AND HER SIGNATORIES APPARENTLY DID NOT
NOTICE THAT ISRAEL AGREED TO A PALESTINIAN STATE MANY TIMES ALREADY.
1937: PEEL COMMISSION;
1947: UN PARTITION;
1949: RHODES ARMISTICE AGREEMENTS;
1967: POST-6-DAY-WAR PEACE OFFERS;
1979: CAMP DAVID 1 INVITATION TO ARAFAT;
1991: MADRID CONFERENCE; 1993: OSLO ACCORDS;
1995: OSLO II;
2000: CAMP DAVID 2;
2001: CAMP DAVID 2 'BRIDGE PLAN';
2002: BUSH SPEECH AT ANNAPOLIS;
2004: SHARON SPEECH OFFERING UNILATERAL OR BILATERAL TALKS FOR STATEHOOD;
2005: SHARON UNILATERAL AND UNCONDITIONAL CEDING OF GAZA STRIP;
2006: OLMERT COMMITMENT TO UNILATERALLY AND UNCONDITIONALLY PULL OUT OF MOST
OF WEST BANK.

HOW DID THE WRITER OF THIS EMAIL MISS ALL OF THOSE ISRAELI AGREEMENTS FOR
THE CREATION OF A PALSTINIAN STATE? AND, JUST AS PUZZLING, WHY DOES THIS
EMAIL'S WRITER NOT NOTICE THAT THE ARAB RESPONSE TO EVERY OFFER WAS
REJECTION, VIOLENCE, TERRORISM, MASS MURDER, AND ALL-OUT WAR?)
>
>
>
>The world can not remain a passive witness to this unfolding disaster.

(dml: WHY NOT? IT HAS REMAINED A PASSIVE WITNESS TO JUST ABOUT EVERY OTHER
HUMAN-MADE DISASTER IN THE WORLD SINCE TIME BEGAN.  TURKISH GENOCIDE OF
ARMENAINS, GERMAN GENOCIDE OF JEWS, TIBET OCCUPIED BY CHINA, NUMEROUS
AFRICAN GENOCIDES OF OTHER AFRICANS, MASS MURDERS OF CHRISTIANS IN LEBANON,
GENOCIDE OF CHRISTIANS IN SUDAN, MASS MURDER OF MOSLEM AGAINST MOSLEM IN
ALGERIA AND SUDAN AND YEMEN AND IRAQ, SLAVERY IN MAURITANIA AND SUDAN,
ANTI-CHRISTIAN OPPRESSION IN MANY MOSLEM COUNTRIES......AND, MOST IMPORTANT,
THE WORLD HAS REMAINED A PASSIVE WITNESS TO THE ATTROCITIES COMMITTED BY
ARAB STATES AND TERROR GROUPS AGAINST ISRAEL....BUT HAS SUDDEN AWAKENED WITH
HIGH UMBRAGE WHEN ISRAEL SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS ITSELF.

AND, EQUALLY INCOMPREHENSIBLE, WHERE WAS THIS EMAIL'S WRITER WHEN ALL OF
THOSE DISASTERS WERE UNFOLDING?  WHY HAS SHE SUDDENLY QUICKENED TO THE
PLIGHT OF THE PALESTINIANS WHILE IGNORING ALL OTHER DISASTERS INCLUDING
THOSE OF HER OWN ISRAELI NATION, UNTIL NOW?)

>IT is the duty of the international community to rescue life and oblige the
>Israeli government to stop its military activities, respect the elected
>government of the Palestinian people, resume financial assistance to the
>Palestinian government and introduce genuine  negotiations that will
>lead to a just peace.

(dml: HMMM...MORE ODD STUFF.  HOW DOES SHE KNOW WHAT THE DUTY OF THE
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY IS?  IS SHE A SPECIALIST IN INTERNATIONAL LAW?  CAN
SHE QUOTE FROM THE FOUNDING DOCUMENTS OF THE UNITED NATIONS AS TO WHAT THE
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY MUST DO?

AND, PERHAPS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE HYPOTHETICAL QUESTIONS ABOVE, WAS SHE
CALLING ON THE WORLD TO RESCUE JEWISH LIFE DURING THE DECADES OF ARAB
TERRORIST WAR?  DID SHE, OR ANYONE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER, CALL UPON THE
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO INCARCERATE ARAFAT FOR THE CRIME [PER THE UN's
INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE INTERNATIONAL DECLARATION
BANNING GENOCIDE OR THE INCITEMENT TO GENOCIDE] OF INCITING TO GENOCIDE OF
JEWS IN ISRAEL?

AND, EVERY BIT AS PUZZLING AS THE QUESTIONS I HAVE ALREADY RAISED, IF THIS
EMAIL'S WRITER FEELS THAT THE OPENLY AND FREELY AND DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED
GOVERNMENT OF THE PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY SHOULD BE ACCORDED THE RESPECT DUE
TO A BONA FIDE GOVERNMENT, IS SHE THEN WILLING TO DEMAND OF HAMAS THAT THEY
LIVE UP TO THE OBLIGATIONS OF SUCH A GOVERNMENT, INCLUDING, INTER ALIA, TO
CREATE A STATE RUN BY RULE OF LAW WHICH LIVES AT PEACE WITH ITS NEIGHBORS?)

>
>We urge  all academics and intellectuals of conscience worldwide to support
>this call.

(dml: I URGE ALL WHO RECEIVE THIS EMAIL TO SEND IT ON TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS
POSSIBLE. I ENCOURAGE ALL WHO RECEIVE IT TOO)
