Marching with Refugees and Asylum Seekers
24 Oct 2007
PHR-Israel, in cooperation with human rights groups, invites you to join a march for the rights of Refugees and Asylum Seekers on Friday, 2/11/07, Gathering at 22 Rothschild Avenue (Corner of Nahalat Binyamin St.)
Who is a refugee? A person who flees his or her country as a result of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.
Approximately 4,000 refugees and asylum seekers reside in Israel today. Many of them arrived to Israel after suffering from persecution,
detention, violence, and torture. Among the main refugee communities in Israel are Congolese, Cote d’Ivoire, Sudan, Liberia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Burma.
Why are we marching?
· We march in order to protest against Israeli policies of exclusion towards refugees and asylum seekers
· We march in order to demand social rights for refugees – health, welfare and education
· We march in order to stress that 600 refugees and asylum seekers are still in detention.
· We march in order to celebrate the social and cultural diversity that refugees bring to Israel.
What are we demanding?
· Fair and equal asylum process for any asylum seeker, regardless of her or his country of origin.
· The immediate release of refugees and asylum seekers from detention.
· “Social Residency” status that will grant refugees and asylum seekers eligibility for basic social rights.
· An immediate halt to the deportation of asylum seekers according to the "Hot Return Procedure", a procedure that endangers refugees' lives, and does not conform to Israeli and International law.
· To put a stop to any deportation of refugees and asylum seekers
